Basofil fiber is an advanced technology heat and flame resistant melamine fiber that enhances the performance of high temperature, dry filter media widely used today in pulse-jet baghouses. Basofil fibers are unique in that their uniform distribution of non-round cross-sections provide the benefits of additional filtration surface area and greater airflow, which is not possible with finer denier filtration fibers (see the picture below - the electron micrograph shows the cross section of Basofil fiber. The fibers are non-round and of varying denier). When Basofil is blended with fibers of different chemistries, such as meta-aramid, the resulting Baso-Tex filter media exhibits greatly enhanced small particle capture. This is due to beneficial triboelectric effects, and results in improved air cleaning performance as compared with standard 100% meta-aramid filter media. In asphalt, cement, foundry, steel and numerous calcining industries the higher airflow of Baso-Tex filter media offers important economic benefits. At constant airflows, field experience and controlled tests have demonstrated pressure drop reductions of 20% or more with Baso-Tex filter media.
HIGHER AIRFLOW AND LOWER PRESSURE DROP
In addition to higher airflow and lower pressure drop, the inherent properties of Basofil fiber impart two other important advantages to the enhanced filter media. The first is improved spark resistance. Unlike meta-aramid fiber, which shrinks away from the flame, Basofil fiber is made from a thermo set resin which never melts or shrinks away from a flame. This means that Baso-Tex filter media will resist "pinho|e formation" caused by sparks, better than standard meta-aramid filter media.
The second additional advantage of Baso-Tex filter media is the lower particulate emission levels obtained when filtering fine dusts. With other filter media types, fine dusts can swiftly cause, blinding and high pressure drop operation, leading to premature bag failure. Baso-Tex filter media helps to maintain low emission levels while reducing pressure drop buildup and the risk of blinding.
LONGER FILTER BAG LIFE
Filter bags naturally wear out from frequent pulsing or progressive blinding. Filter media enhanced with Basofil fiber addresses both problems. Greater permeability (lower pressure drop) often permits differential controlled systems to pulse less frequently thereby reducing wear and tear on the filter bag. The unique features of Baso-Tex filter media also help prevent the dust cake from compacting which can lead to fabric blinding. As with all high temperature filter media, bag life can be maximized by maintaining lower baghouse air temperatures. For optimum baglife, continuous use temperatures up to 375° F (190° C) are recommended; although, surges up to 425° F (220° C) can be tolerated.
LOWER OPERATING COSTS
Reduced energy use by exhaust blower motors can provide significant cost reductions, particularly in continuous operations such as steel and cement production. Energy savings of 20% or greater can be achieved due to the lower pressure drop operation of Baso-Tex filter media. In some applications, cost savings in excess of $100,000 per year have been obtained
IMPROVED SPARK RESISTANCE
Many filter media fibers quickly melt or shrink away when exposed to flame. Basofil fiber’s unique chemistry, however, prevents it from melting or shrinking under flaming conditions. This superior flame resistance of Basofll fiber improves the spark resistance and can be a vitally important advantage in foundry and steel applications.
HIGHER FILTRATION EFFICIENCY When filtering fine dusts, Baso-Tex filter media has been determined to reduce particulate emission levels by as much as 70% over standard meta-aramid filter media.
